Autumn 1 (2026)
Week 1
Welcome back to school. We hope you all enjoyed your break and are raring to go in Year 2! We are looking forward to seeing just how amazing you are (we've heard good things from your Year 1 teachers!).
We have already had a fantastic start to the new school year. All the children have settled really well and are already working hard!
In English this week we started our new Learning Journey based on the book 'Have You Filled a Bucket Today'. We have been thinking about what characteristics you need to be a bucket filler, using our sounds to spell the adjectives.
In Maths we have been making ten and counting in tens.
We have been discussing what our ideal classrooms would look, sound and feel like in PSHE. We then made promises to each other and agreed our class rules.

Week 7
We have had a brilliant final week of Year 2! We thoroughly enjoyed performing our leavers' concert for our parents and were so proud of how confidently we sang and remembered all the words to our poem.
In Maths, we persevered with learning how to tell the time and showed great determination in our learning.
We also completed our colourful monsters in Design and Technology, and it was wonderful to see everyone's creativity shine.
What a fantastic way to end a successful year—we are so proud of everything the children have achieved and wish them all the very best as they move on to Year 3!
Year 2 Summer 2 Week 7
Week 6
What another scorcher of a week! The hot weather certainly hasn't stopped the fun or the learning.
We started the week with a fantastic leavers' treat. In the morning, we learned the exciting sport of fencing and in the afternoon we had a go at archery. Everyone had a brilliant time trying something new!
In Maths, we have been learning all about measurement. We have practised reading different types of scales, including weighing scales, capacity measures and thermometers to measure temperature.
In English, we have been inspired by the book There Is Only One You to write our own poems celebrating what makes each of us unique and special.
Some classes have started making their worry monsters in DT. We are creating them from felt and using our sewing skills to carefully stitch around the edges.
We completed our Florence Nightingale topic by reflecting on her lasting legacy. We designed postage stamps to show what we think she is best remembered for and the impact she had on nursing.
In Science, we carried out an investigation to find out how the height of a ramp affects how far a toy car travels. We discovered that the higher the ramp, the further the car rolled.
To finish the week, the whole school enjoyed a fun and engaging magic show, which also taught us some very important lessons about stranger danger and staying safe.

Week 4
Although we have loved seeing the sunshine – what a hot week it has been!
On Monday we took part in the NSPCC ‘Speak Out and Stay Safe’ Workshop. We learnt about who are safe adults were and we met ‘Buddy’ the speech bubble, who was encouraging us to ‘Speak Out’ to a safe adult in order to help us ‘Stay Safe’.
In Maths, we have been learning all about fractions. We started the week by introducing and exploring what one half, one quarter and one third is. We then looked at the symbols that represent these fractions e.g one half is ½, one quarter is ¼ and one third is 1/3. We then used these skills by representing one half in a bar model. We needed to use our multiplication and division skills to help us with this.
In English, we have started a brand-new learning journey based on the book ‘A Planet Full of Plastic’. This is a book written by Neal Layton, the illustrator that we met last week. We talked about how plastic and rubbish is damaging our environment and what impact it is having on animals. We then used the skills from our last learning journey (writing sentences in different forms) to write a letter to the ‘Mayor of Petersfield’, to inform her about the issues of plastic and give her solutions on how we can help. We then went back over subordinating conjunctions and wrote powerful and persuasive phrases to encourage people to reduce their use of plastic.

Week 3
We have finished our English learning journey using the book Tidy by writing a letter to Pete to ask him to stop tidying! We used questions, commands, statements and exclamatory sentences in our work. What a tidy badger he is!
In Maths we have been using Number lines to subtract multiples of ten and ones from a 2 digit number that bridge tens. We have been using different strategies to do this.
In Science we have been comparing difference surfaces by investigating how far a marble will travel when dropped from a ramp. We enjoyed this and found it travelled the furthest when in was on a smooth shiny floor.
In P.E. we enjoyed doing some Greek dancing and continuing using our rackets to practice hitting tennis balls at targets. It was great fun.
In Design and Technology we started our Design for our soft toy that we are making. We have been thinking about the materials that we will use and the shapes we want our soft toy to be.
In computing we carried on making music on the ipads adding and layering more sounds. Its amazing how different the sounds are that we create.
In History we thought about the changes that Florence had made to the work that nurses do and how she even has an impact on Hospitals are today!
To finish off the week, we were delighted to welcome the illustrator and author, Neal Layton. He told us how he goes about drawing pictures for books and what materials he uses. He then gave us a step by step demonstration of how to draw a bumble bee. We followed along and everyone produced the most amazing pictures.
Year 2 Summer 2 Week 3
Week 2
We have continued our English learning journey using the book Tidy to consolidate our understanding of different sentence types, including statements, questions, commands and exclamatory sentences. The week culminated in us all writing as if we were Pete the badger, explaining to his friends why he enjoyed tidying the forest so much.
In Maths we have been using Dienes to subtract 1-digit numbers from a 2-digit number. We have learnt the skill of exchanging to allow us to bridge the ten.
In Computing we have enjoyed making music on the ipads using Chrome Music Lab. This week we focused on experimenting with the notes and tempo.
We have been considering what the word ‘authority’ means, who has authority and what the characteristics are of someone who has authority.
We have learnt just how disgusting the Scutari hospital was before Florence Nightingale made her changes. We are very pleased she was able to help the poor soldiers.
We had so much fun learning some line dance moves in PE. We’ve learnt a box-step, grapevine and a heel-toe tap. We need a bit more practice to master the turns! Yeehaa!
Year 2 Summer 2 Week 2 2026
Week 1
This week in English, we began our new learning journey based on the story of Pete the Badger. The children have been developing their inference skills by exploring the thoughts and feelings of different characters and discussing events from a range of viewpoints. Through drama activities, hot-seating and role play, they have gained a deeper understanding of the woodland animals and have started to think carefully about how authors create characters and emotions within a story. The children also used their imagination to write a narrative for a wordless page, using exciting vocabulary and descriptive language to bring the scene to life.
In Maths, we have continued developing our understanding of addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers. The children have used practical resources, number lines and drawings to solve problems involving adding 2-digit numbers, subtracting multiples of ten and crossing through ten. They have shown increasing confidence when partitioning numbers into tens and ones, explaining their methods and tackling challenging missing number problems.
In Computing, the children learnt about staying safe online through our Internet Traffic Light lesson. They discussed how some websites and apps are suitable for children while others are not, and learnt the importance of speaking to a trusted adult if they ever feel unsure or uncomfortable online. The children showed a mature understanding of how to make safe choices when using technology.
In Design and Technology, we began our new textiles project by investigating and evaluating a range of soft toys and textile products. The children explored different fabrics, joining methods and finishing techniques, learning new technical vocabulary and discussing which materials would be most suitable for creating their own soft toy later this term.
In RE, we started our new unit on authority. The children discussed the different people in their lives who help, guide and support them and thought about why these people are important. Through discussion and drama, they reflected on what it feels like to be given instructions and considered how kindness and respect can influence the way we respond to others.
In PSHE, we explored the story Sam Moves Away and discussed the feelings that can come with change and saying goodbye. The children reflected on their own experiences and talked about the emotions people may feel when they miss someone. They also considered ways of keeping in touch with friends and family, showing great empathy and thoughtfulness throughout the lesson.
We have been incredibly proud of the children's enthusiasm, thoughtful discussions and positive attitudes to learning this week, and we look forward to another exciting week ahead.

Week 6
In Maths we have been using a numberline to add together two 2 digit numbers. Using our knowledge of counting on in 10s from any number and number bonds we have been making jumps on the numberline using the most efficient methods.
In English we have been writing about a day at the beach. Looking at a beautiful picture, we have been using all our writing skills to describe what we could see, hear and feel at the seaside. We used expanded noun phrases to make our writing more interesting and detailed, helping to paint a clear picture for the reader. We have also been trying hard to use exclamatory sentences to add excitement to our writing.
In Science we have been continuing our plants topic. We were pleased to bring home our Sunflowers which have been growing for 6 weeks! We enjoyed watching them change and grow and learning about what plants need to stay healthy.
In Music we continued to work on pitch, creating our own Wispy Willow Tune, going high and low. We enjoyed experimenting with different sounds and using our voices carefully to change the pitch.
In PSHE we learnt about first aid and learnt a little bit about the Red Cross. We discussed ways to help others and what to do in an emergency.
In Art we completed a watercolour picture of the landscape and used collage to create the pebbles. We carefully selected different materials to add texture and detail to our seaside scenes.
Year 2 Summer 1 Week 6
Week 5
In Maths we have been continuing to bridge through ten to find the total of multiples of tens and ones, using dienes. It is important to remember that we start with the biggest number first and then find the ‘cheeky 10’ hiding in the ones number. We then finished the week by adding together 2-digit numbers using the bar method and part, part whole models to help us.
In English we have finished our learning journey of ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ We all wrote a narrative to tell the story of what was happening in the pictures, using the skills that we have learnt over the past few weeks – possessive apostrophes and exclamatory sentences. The teachers have loved listening to the wonderful sentences that we all came up with.
In Science we have been continuing our plants topic. Each week we have been checking how well our Sunflowers have grown and have enjoyed looking after them. We can’t wait to brin them home at half term and to see how tall they get. We have also been monitoring our cress experiment to see how different factors affect its growth. This week we have been focusing on why some plants die after producing seeds, while others live for many years and produce new seeds each year. From this information we then decided to plant the seeds from an apple, strawberry, tomato and a pepper to find out what will happen. Watch this space to find out whether they will grow or not?
In Music we were using the glockenspiels to compose our pieces of music in small groups. We had to make up our own tune to match the first two lines of the Wispy Willow song: ‘Wispy Willow high or low? Wispy Willow off you go!’ To helps us to think about the pitch (high and low patterns) we could choose to jump, step or leap up or down the notes from high to low or low to high.
In PSHE we have been learning the names of our internal body parts and what they do. We played a game in small groups, using a special dice telling us what each body part does and then we needed to colour in that part of the body.
As part of our Geography topic ‘Brilliant Beaches’ we enjoyed a day out by the seaside on Hayling Island. Luckily the weather stayed dry (ish) so that we were able to take part in 4 different activities. We went on a scavenger hunt to look for bugs and plants that grow and live in the Heathlands, we made our own stone people after reading the book ‘The Stone Boy and The Girl’, with the things we found on the beach. We then used our art skills that we have been learning the half term to make observational drawings of the rocks and shells around us and we took part in a geography worship led by Paul Turner. We finished our trip with a picnic and a play on the beach. What a brilliant time we had!

Week 4
We came back to school refreshed after a lovely long weekend thanks to the Bank Holiday, raring to go!
We have continued using Where the Wild Things Are as stimulus in our writing. This week we’ve been learning how to use possessive apostrophes eg. Max’s golden crown, and exclamatory sentences. Did you know that an exclamatory sentence starts with what or how? Eg. What fun they had! How noisy they were! We then used these new skills to wrote a description of Max’s bedroom.
In Maths we continue to master the skill of adding two numbers whilst bridging ten. We have to use our number bond knowledge to help us first make that “cheeky ten” to help us solve the number problems.
We’ve been learning how to change backgrounds using ScratchJnr in Computing and adding speech bubbles to our sprite.
We’ve been using watercolours in Art to create a beach scene. We’ve painted the sky and the sea. Next week we will use collage to create a pebbly beach.
Most of our plants we planted in Week 1 continue to grow well. We are plotting their growth in our science books. By observing the cress we started to grow last week, we were surprised that a plant will grow if kept in the dark, however they will not be as healthy as a plant with sunlight. Likewise, a plant grown in a cooler environment will grow, but they are smaller than the plant that has warmth and are not as healthy. We were correct that if you didn’t add water, the seeds would not even germinate.
In RE we have been discussing how to respect and look after the world. We all agreed that it doesn’t matter which creation story you believe, we are living on this planet and therefore are all responsible for looking after it.
Year 2 Summer 1 Week 4 2026
Week 3
In English, we have been exploring Where the Wild Things Are, developing vocabulary such as wild and rumpus. The children loved bringing the story to life through their own “wild rumpus” and worked hard sequencing events from the story. They have also begun using possessive apostrophes and writing exciting exclamatory sentences using What and How.
In Maths, we have been focusing on addition, starting with multiples of ten and building up to adding ones and two-digit numbers. The children used practical resources to support their understanding and began using number lines to solve problems more efficiently.
In RE, we explored the idea of creation by making our own objects and discussing what it means to create. We then learnt about the Christian and Jewish creation story and worked together to sequence the events.
In Geography, we began our Brilliant Beaches topic, learning what a coastline is and exploring different coastal features such as cliffs and bays.
In Computing, we discussed online safety and how technology can make us feel, before beginning to create simple programs using ScratchJr.
It has been a great week, and we are very proud of how the children are growing in confidence and enthusiasm. Thank you for your continued support at home.
Year 2 Summer 1 Week 3 2026
Week 2
In Maths we have been revising tens and ones and how we can use the dienes to help us to add totals together. We have been drawing our own number lines in order to help us to think about the positioning of each number. We have then been using the dienes and the number lines to find out the total when adding a 2 digit number to a 1 digit number.
In R.E we are learning about creation. This week we found out that Christians and Jews believe that God is responsible for creating everything and some even believe that he did so in 6 days, on the 7th day, he rested. We talked about what happened on each day of the ‘creation week’ with the children. We then used this information to sequence the pictures of the creation story.
In English we are finishing off our learning journey about ‘The Disgusting Sandwich.’ This week we have written our own set of instructions on how to make our own disgusting sandwiches. We have learnt about time adverbials such as firstly, now and finally as well as imperative verbs such as spread, place and take and have added these to our writing. We have even used our own written instructions to direct our teachers on how to make a disgusting sandwich.
We loved wearing our Pyjamas on Friday to raise money for the charity chosen by our School Councillors – ‘Hounds for Heroes.’ On Wednesday we got to meet Shelly, Kate and Bobbie the Dog, who were from the charity to find out a bit more about what the charity does. We learnt that Bobbie is trained to go shopping, pull drawers open and will go and live with someone who used to be in the armed forces and needs additional help.
In P.E we are developing the correct techniques of dodging attackers and defenders in simple games, in order to get the beanbag into the hoop and score a point.
In Science, we have been continuing to water our Sunflower Seeds and we are very much hoping that they will grow. This week we talked about what plants need to help them to grow (warmth, light, water and soil) and we started an experiment to find out what will happen, if one of these things were taken away. We are looking forward to seeing what might happen over the next few weeks. We have also loved visiting the chicks this week and it has been amazing to see how much they have grown and changed. They are getting bigger, starting to grow feathers and getting louder as they chirp. Each class has been keeping a diary of the changes that are happening and now that they are getting bigger, we were able to take the chicks out to hold them and watch them wander around. It was very egg-citing!
On Friday Mr Geary visited all the Year 2 classes to do another science workshop. This time we worked together in small groups to build an Arctic vehicle using Lego. We then used the iPads to write a Scratch program to drive our vehicle. We tested out our programs to check that they worked and ran in the correct sequence.

Week 1
We had a brilliant first week of the summer term in Year 2. In Maths, we continued our learning about money, building our confidence in recognising coins and working out different amounts. In English, we read the story The Disgusting Sandwich, which inspired lots of laughter and creativity! We then had great fun coming up with our own revolting sandwich ingredients—some of them were truly horrible!
In P.E., we are learning how to dodge and enjoyed playing games to practise this skill. In Science, we all planted our own sunflower seeds and are excited to watch them grow. In Music, we learnt a new song and explored pitch. In Geography, we started thinking about the questions we would like answered about beaches in preparation for our trip to Hayling Island. In Art we did observation drawings of shells inspired by Amira Gale and in R.E. we started thinking about the big idea of creation and we made our own creations!
We also had the excitement of seeing the chicks hatch that are living in school at the moment. We wore ourselves out bouncing for bikes, showing great energy and enthusiasm!

Week 5
We’ve come to the end of another egg-cellent half term! The children have worked incredibly hard, and we are all ready for a well-deserved Easter break.
This week, we completed our History topic with an exciting visit to the Titanic Museum in Southampton. The children loved exploring the museum and learning about the crew members, many of whom were from Southampton. During a hands-on workshop, they examined artefacts from the time, experienced some of the smells of the ship, and thoughtfully discussed who might have been given places on the lifeboats. They also took part in a practical activity using an ice cube tray and water to help them understand why the Titanic sank, bringing their learning to life in a memorable way.
In Maths, we have been learning about money. The children have been exploring the value of 1p, 2p, 5p, and 10p coins and are beginning to recognise and use them confidently.
In Design and Technology, we made our own healthy snacks. The children practised safe cutting skills, chose their own vegetables, carbohydrates, and dips, and followed their designs carefully. We finished with a lovely indoor picnic on the carpet, enjoying the snacks we had created.
We were also delighted to welcome Harold and the SCARF team into school this week. The children learned about different emotions and discussed helpful ways to support themselves and others when feeling sad, upset, frustrated, or angry.
Creativity was in full bloom as we entered an art competition inspired by spring flowers. The children produced some truly beautiful paintings—choosing a winner will certainly be a challenge!
To round off the week, we took part in a fun Easter egg hunt around the school. The children searched for hidden letters and worked together to unscramble them and crack the code. It was a tricky challenge, but they showed fantastic resilience and teamwork to solve it.

Year 2 Spring 2 Week 5 2026
Week 3
This week we had a brilliant time being scientists and exploring different materials during our Science Day. We have been testing how stretchy materials are in order to ‘Find a suitable material to cover the toes of someone who needs to wear a plaster cast on their foot. All of their socks are too small.’
We have been exploring which materials can change shape, when they are bent, squashed, twisted or stretched in order to find out which one of these statements are true:
- All materials change shape when they are squashed, bent, twisted or stretched.
- Only some materials can change shape.
- Some materials can be bent, but they can’t be stretched.
We have also been working in teams to find out how we can drop an egg, from a height, without it cracking. We used different materials to find the best way to protect our egg. The big question is…Did our eggs survive?
On Friday we enjoyed taking part in science workshops with Mr. Geary. He showed us lots of amazing and wonderful experiments, like how to make rainbow fizz and elephant toothpaste. He even showed us some that we can try at home, such as the water bridge experiment which uses colourful water, kitchen towel and capillary action to demonstrate how water can move up instead of down.
In PE we have been continuing to develop our teamwork skills. We played a game where we each had to take on a different role – ‘The Feeder, The Shooter and The Midfielder’. It was the job of ‘The Shooter’ to throw the beanbags into the hoop, while standing on a spot. ‘The Midfielder’ then had to collect the beanbags and return them to ‘The Feeder’. ‘The Feeder’ then had to pass the beanbags back to ‘The Shooter’ and for every beanbag that ended in the hoop meant a point was scored. We took turns in playing each role. We then joined with another team and played against each other.
In Maths, we are moving onto division. We have started off by sorting 12 and then 20 counters into equal groups. Once we had put them into equal groups, we then wrote a division number expression to match e.g 12 2, 12 4 or 12 3. We then went on to calculating the number of groups within a division story such as I have 15 biscuits and there are 5 in each bag. How many bags of biscuits do I have? We then looked at how our multiplication knowledge can help us with division as it is just the inverse of it e.g 10 2= 5 or 5X2=10. We have also been using our division knowledge to help us to solve problems with length.

Week 2
What another exciting week we have had!
In English, we continued to study Interview with a Tiger and Other Clawed Beasts by Andy Seed, exploring how the author presents information in a humorous and engaging way. We enjoyed spotting the jokes and playful language used in the text. We also had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day and were very proud of our creative story spoons, which showed characters and stories we love.
In Maths, we continued learning about multiplication, focusing on the commutative property and using arrays to show that numbers can be multiplied in any order to give the same total.
In DT, we continued our healthy eating topic and practised using utensils safely to cut vegetables. We worked carefully to develop our food preparation skills and showed great enthusiasm while trying different vegetables.
In PE, we continued learning about communication in teams and took part in activities that helped us practise working together and listening carefully to one another.
In Computing, we were introduced to pictograms and used iPads and QR codes to create colourful digital charts.
Finally, in History, we sequenced the key events of the Titanic sinking and learned more about what happened on the night of 15 April 1912. We are very enthusiastic to continue learning about this important part of history. 🚢📚
Year 2 Spring 2 Week 2
Week 1
The first week of the Spring 2 term has got off to a fantastic start in Year 2!
In English, we have begun an exciting new learning journey based on Interview with a Tiger and Other Clawed Beasts by Andy Seed, who visited our school two years ago. We have been immersing ourselves in the text, exploring how the author presents information in a humorous and engaging way. The children have particularly enjoyed identifying how he adds jokes and playful language to his informative answers.
In Maths, we have continued our work on multiplication. This week, we have been learning about the commutative property of multiplication and exploring how numbers can be multiplied in any order to achieve the same total. The children have drawn a range of arrays to demonstrate their understanding and have been careful to ensure that their groupings are equal.
In DT, we launched our new topic on healthy eating. We began by learning about how different vegetables grow (whether under the ground, on vines, or above the soil). We also explored where in the world they are grown and considered which vegetables can be grown in the UK and which are imported. The highlight of the week was, of course, tasting them! Many children showed great bravery by trying vegetables they had never tasted before, or by giving foods another chance - and some were pleasantly surprised to discover new favourites.
In PE, we have been focusing on teamwork. The children learned new games that required careful listening. It has been wonderful to see them supporting one another and developing their collaborative, problem solving skills while having lots of fun.
In PSHE, we discussed moments when thoughts or words feel like they are about to “erupt” from our mouths. Through the story My Mouth Is a Volcano by Julia Cook, we explored the importance of self-control and the power of choice. The children learned practical strategies to help manage these moments positively.
In Computing, we were introduced to pictograms. The children discovered that creating pictograms digitally on an iPad can be much quicker and more efficient than making them by hand with paper and glue! They used QR codes to access an online pictogram tool and enjoyed presenting their data in a clear and colourful way. (Why not have a practise at home? www.j2e.com/jit5#pictogram )
Finally, we are incredibly excited to have started our new History topic on the RMS Titanic. The enthusiasm has been wonderful to see! In our first lesson, we studied a painting of the liner sinking and worked in small groups to identify clues about the tragic events of 15th April 1912. We are very much looking forward to learning more about this significant moment in local history.

Week 6
Another half term has gone by and we have reached the half way point in Year 2! Can you believe it?
We continue to work hard and have learnt so much this half term.
This week was Children’s Mental Health week. We started the week by thinking about the word ‘belonging’ and what it means to us. We created a class display which we then put in the Year 2 area to show that we belong not just in our class, but in Year 2 too. Throughout the week we had some mindful moments, like Cosmic Yoga, mindful colouring whilst listening to calm music and even having time in the library to sit and quietly enjoy a book. We finished the week by wearing our scarf to school.
In English we completed our learning journey by writing a diary as if we were Minik, the boy in our story. We made sure we added contractions and used the past tense. Some of us even used conjunctions and -est suffixes which we learnt in our previous learning journey which impressed our teachers!
In Maths we continue to learn how to multiply. We have been using the 2, 5 and 10 times tables but we are not very confident YET. We need to practice counting in twos, fives and tens over the half term holiday. Please help us to do this.
We have had fun making our Beebots travel across a mat by programming them correctly in Computing. We had to make predictions first and then test them out. Finally, we had to learn the skill of debugging when we came across obstacles. We were much better at it then our teachers!
In RE we finished our topic on Special Books by sharing our own special books. We enjoyed telling our friends why our books were special for us.
We have been learning about food chains in Science. We played a game where we had to match food to the animals to create a small food chain. We had fun and realised that many animals eat the same thing.
On Wednesday we had hedgehogs visit us as part of our Habitats topic in Science. They were very cute. We learnt about where they liked to live, what they liked to eat and even found out that their poo smells horrible!
And finally, just because Mrs Parsons is SUPER PROUD of her sewers, we have added some photos of the amazing bookmarks the Sewing Club made this half term. We are sure you’ll be impressed!

Week 5
This week in Maths, we have been continuing our multiplication journey. We’ve been focusing on groups containing 0, 1 and 2 objects. We have learnt that multiplication is communitive, meaning that it doesn’t matter which number we put first in our equation, we will always end up with the same answer e.g. 3x2 means there are 3 groups of 2 or 2x3 means that there are two, three times. We have also been practicing our 2s, 5s and 10 times tables by singing along to songs.
In Science, we have been learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We worked in groups to finds out information to help us to identify animals which live in different habitats and why. We used the iPads and information books to help us to find the answers to our questions about a Penguin, Camel, Cheetah and a Toucan. We then built Biomes for these animals using Lego. We thought carefully about what their environment might look like.
In Art, we have been continuing to practice our press printing, to recreate patterns on a circle. We are developing these skills to help us to produce our own piece of African Art.
In Computing we have been continuing to explore our Robot Algorithms by making predictions using a ‘paper bot’ Beebot to map out the route that we think it will take. We used maps to enable us to follow a step-by-step program and identify what the outcome will be. We then used the real Beebots to test to see that our predictions were right or not.
In English we have been continuing the learning journey based on the book ‘Big Bear, Little Brother’. This week we have learnt about verbs and how these can be changed into past tense. We have learnt about contractions – these are 2 words that we join together to make 1 word e.g. I am – I’m. We then read lots of different diary extracts to help us to identify the skills that we learnt.

Week 4
This week in English we started a learning journey based on the story Big Bear Little brother. We started with a lesson on inference, using clues to help us work out what the author was thinking and what the story might be about. We then started the story and had discussions about how we thought the characters in the story might feel.
In Maths we have started learning about multiplication as repeated addition and we have created and been drawing groups of ‘things’ which help us understand this Maths idea and then used Cuisenaire.
In Geography we have been using our observation skills to compare Queen Elizabeth Country Park in Petersfield with Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.
In Art this week we have been using paint and free moving objects to create patterns on circular paper.
In Music we went to space! We learnt a new song about going to the Moon and we put our space suits on and pretended that we were there!
In PE we have continued to have fun dribbling and passing a ball using our hands. We carried on practising this skill in another game about speed.
In RE we have been learning why the Torah Scroll is special to Jews. We even looked at a real one. We were very respectful and didn't touch it.

In English we completed our Clockwork Dragon learning journey by writing a letter in the role of the Mayor to the brave, clever children who defecated Flamethrottle by making a bigger, scarier and more terrifying dragon. We used all the skills we’d learnt over the past three weeks such as adding suffixes -er and -est, using commas in a list and adding subordinating conjunctions.
In Maths we have been adding and subtracting one ten from a 2-digit number, adding and subtracting a multiple of ten to a 2-digit number and partitioning tens and ones in different ways.
In Art this week we have been learning to press print. We used paint and objects to create repeating patterns on our paper. It was a lot of fun!
In Computing we have been thinking about how important it is to give clear instructions. This will help us when we move on to programming our Beebots.
In PE we had fun dribbling and passing a ball using our hands. We even played a game whereby we had to move around defenders and pass the ball to our team mates to score points. In another lesson, we learnt to chest pass a ball. We found this trickier, but were resilient and kept practising.

In English we carried on our Clockwork Dragon learning by using when, because, if and that to join ideas in sentences, adding -er and -est to make words like bigger and scariest, practising commas in a list to improve our writing, and using our GPC knowledge to correct spellings in the Mayor’s letter so our sentences made sense.
In maths this week we have been using our number bond knowledge to help us add and subtract two-digit numbers, making ‘cheeky tens’ with tens frames, spotting patterns when bridging over ten, and even exploring ten more and ten less using a hundred square.
In art we looked at beautiful African and Ugandan patterns and had a go at making our own repeating designs in our sketchbooks using pencils and felt-tips, thinking carefully about shapes and colours that repeat.
In computing we learned about keeping safe online by sorting which information is personal and practising how passwords work like keys, helping us protect our devices and accounts.
In music we learned our alien chant and explored using our voices in lots of fun ways, changing how we sounded and layering noises together just like a class of space creatures.
In geography we learned that towns and cities all over the world have things like houses, shops, schools and churches, and we sorted pictures to spot similarities and differences before finding some of the places on a map.
In RE we talked about the word ‘special’, shared things that are special to us and read the story Dogger to help us think about why certain items or people mean so much.

Week 1
Happy new Year and Welcome back to another fun filled term. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and have enjoyed hearing all about what the children have been up to over their time off.
In Maths this week, we have been using the dienes to add and subtract 1 - digit numbers from 2 - digit numbers. We have been trying to use our number facts to help us with trying to solve the missing number problems. We have also been using our Rekenreks to show doubles. We have learnt that doubles can hide within doubles e.g. 12 can be made of 6 and 6 but can also be made of double 5 and double 1.
In English, we are starting our new 3 week learning journey. It is based on a book called ‘The Clockwork Dragon’ by Jonathon Emmet and Elys Dolan. We started the week by looking at pictures and examples of text from the book to make a prediction of what the book might be about. We then used our drama skills to take on the roles of the towns people from the book e.g. firefighters, shopkeepers, and knights to discuss our concerns about Flamethrottle the Dragon. We then had a town meeting to feedback to the mayor. We were then introduced to subordinating conjunctions e.g. when, that, because, if and we used these to join two sentences together.
In Geography we have been looking at the are similarities and differences that exist in the human geography of towns and cities around the world. We have revisited our knowledge of towns and cities and where these places are located in the world using a globe and Google Earth. We then looked at pictures of buildings located in these towns and cities and the tried sorting them into four categories – Places of Worship, Shops, Schools and Homes. We then talked about the similarities and differences between the buildings.
In Music, we are starting our new topic called ‘Man on the Moon’. We started the session by chanting a short song rhythmically, while maintaining a steady beat. We were then introduced to the word timbre (pronounced tam-bor) which is musical notes that sound different to another. We then continued to chant our song by changing our voices e.g pinching our noses, using a gruff voice or using a high voice. We then thought about the sounds a rocket makes and in small groups we created our own sound effects, using our voices or instruments. We then chose a conductor who conducted the small groups to create layered sounds to build on our rocket sound effects.

Week 7
One whole term in Year 2 has been completed and we ended with a festive bang! What a fabulous week we have had!
We tackled problem solving in Maths but the problems had a Christmas twist to them. We had to use our knowledge of number facts to solve the problems.
In English we used the short film Edgar the Dragon (the John Lewis advert from 2019) as the stimulus for our learning. We used our inference and deduction skills to think about how all the characters might be feeling, honed our oracy skills to give our opinions, use coordinating conjunctions to join two sentences together before writing a narrative to go with the final scenes of the film.
We have been finishing making our peg angels in Art and they all look so fantastic. We hope they will be a feature in your homes for many Christmases to come.
On Thursday we were treated to a delicious Christmas lunch. Thank you to all the kitchen staff for preparing such a lovely meal. In the afternoon, we watched the pantomime Cinderella, which was very funny.
And finally, Mrs Parsons would like to share the Christmas tree decorations her Sewing Club produced this half term. She is incredibly proud of all the children. They all showed resilience throughout because sewing can be quite tricky. She hopes the decorations will be proudly hanging on your Christmas trees for many, many years.

Week 6
This week Christmas has truly arrived in our classroom and we’ve had so much fun!
We loved performing our Christmas concert at St Peter’s Church. We felt very proud as we sang our festive songs, rang the hand bells and recited our poem. When we sang the final candle-lit song, it felt magical. We think it even brought a few tears to people’s eyes!
Christmas Jumper and Craft Day was amazing. We made gorgeous calendars and cards, and we started creating our peg angels. We used the mark-making skills we’ve been practising in art to design colourful wings inspired by Fra Angelico.
We also took part in the Reindeer Run. We ran for 15 whole minutes around the school track. Even our teachers joined in! We think some of us might be future Olympic runners!
In Music, we finished our topic by performing the group pieces we had created to show Father Christmas’s journey on Christmas Eve. We used instruments such as bells, glockenspiels, wood blocks, shakers and triangles to play the music we wrote on our graphic notation sheets last week.
We also enjoyed a trip out of school! We were really excited to visit Herne Junior School to watch the Year 3 Christmas play. They were brilliant, and we loved cheering them on! We cannot believe this will be us next year! Eek!
Year 2 Autumn 2 Week 6 2025
Week 5
We have been very busy practising for our school performance coming soon and the children are getting very excited as they learn the songs and actions.
In English we have been learning how to make our sentences even better by using lovely describing words and trying out new endings like -er, -est and -ly. We also practised joining our ideas with and, but and or so that our writing sounds smooth and interesting. The children then used all of these skills to write the beginning of their own version of The Lion and the Mouse, thinking carefully about what the animals looked like and how they felt.
In Maths we have been exploring lots of 2D and 3D shapes. We have learned to name them, count their sides, corners and faces, and notice the shapes hidden inside bigger shapes. The children especially enjoyed finding real-life examples in the classroom, such as cuboid cereal boxes and cylinder glue sticks, and talking about what makes each shape special.
In RE we have been learning how candles are used as important symbols in different religions. We discovered that Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah by lighting a Hanukkiah to remember a special miracle, and that Christians use an Advent wreath to help them get ready for Christmas by thinking about hope, peace, love and joy. The children asked thoughtful questions and explored how different communities use candlelight to remember, celebrate and feel connected.
In PSHE we read a story about acts of kindness and talked about what it means to be kind or unkind. The children thought of kind words they could say to others and kind actions they could do, like helping someone, giving a compliment or holding a door open. During circle time, everyone practised saying something kind to the person next to them and we talked about how it felt to both give and receive kindness.
In science we checked our mouldy bread investigation to see where the most germs had grown. The children were amazed (and a little horrified!) to discover that the iPad and the classroom table were the “mouldiest”, which helped us talk about why washing our hands and cleaning shared equipment is so important.
In computing we learned that not all photos we see online are real. The children practised taking clear photos of their favourite part of the classroom, remembering to ask permission first, and then explored pictures that had been changed or made to trick people. We looked for clues that something wasn’t quite right, such as animals that were too big or backgrounds that didn’t match. The children learned that images can be edited or even created by computers, so it’s always important to stop and wonder, “Is it real?”

Week 4
In RE we have been learning about Advent, which means ‘coming’ and is a Christian celebration to prepare for the Christmas of Jesus’ birth. Whilst some of us have an Advent calendar to countdown to Christmas, the church has its own rituals using candles. we looked at an Advent wreath and discussed what each part of it means. The round garland is a symbol for God. It has 5 candles on it- one for each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas and one for Christmas Day itself. There are three purple candles on an Advent Wreath, which represent hope, peace and love. One pink which represents joy and a white one for Christmas Day which symbolises Jesus being the Light of the World.
In English we have been continuing our learning journey which is all about the fable ‘The Lion and the Mouse.’ We have added expanded noun phrases, suffixes and conjunctions such as and, or, but to our writing to make it more interesting for the reader to listen to. This is leading us to write our own opening narrative for this fable.
In Maths we have been learning to use our number facts to help us with addition and subtraction of a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number. We have also been using our Rekenreks during Mastering Number to make numbers up to 20 ensuring that we fill our top row first making it easier for us to subitise these numbers as opposed to counting them.
In computing we have been using the iPads to take our own pictures and then we learnt how to edit these photos to change the effect of them. We then learnt about the online safety aspect of photographs and whether we can identify if the photograph is real or has been changed and edited.
In music we have been continuing to learn about pitch (whether a note is high or low) and how this can be shown using graphic notation. The children created their own pieces of graphic notation and composed a musical journey together in small groups, using their chosen instruments.
This week has been another busy week in Year 2. Not only have we been immersing ourselves into lots of learning, we are also preparing for our Christmas Performance in the Church. We have enjoyed practicing singing our songs and we can’t wait to show them off in a few weeks’ time.

Week 3
In Maths, we’ve been learning about difference and how it relates to subtraction. We have used Cuisenaire rods to help us visualise what difference is. Learning about difference really made us think, but we persevered with it brilliantly. By the end of the week, we could see that difference could be worked out using subtraction and addition.
In English, we have been exploring the fable The Lion and the Mouse. We spent time getting to know the characters and discussing their personalities, actions and motives. Together, we thought carefully about how the lion and the mouse feel at different points in the story and how their emotions change as the events unfold. The children shared thoughtful ideas about bravery, kindness and how even the smallest character can make a big difference.
In Art, we moved on from self-portraits to drawing a picture of an Angel in our own image. We used the mark marking skills we had practised to help us draw the wings and then the body and the face resembled us.
In P.E. we thought about balance and co-ordination. We practised difference balances on the mats and mirrored what our partner was doing.
We learnt about Hanukkah in RE. This is a Jewish festival that lasts for eight nights. It celebrates a miracle when a little bit of oil lasted for eight days. During the festival, families light candles on a special menorah, called a Hannukiah Menorah. They also eat tasty fried foods such as doughnuts and potato latkes and play a spinning game called a dreidel.
In Music we learnt a song called 'Santa is on his Way' to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down and played a game. We had fun passing the beater around the circle, when the song stopped the child holding the beater had to play the chime bars as the words directed eg. If Santa Claus was climbing up, we played the chime bars from a low note all the way to the high notes. We then sang the traditional song 'Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat' and used our hands to show when the notes were getting higher and lower. We found this quite tricky! We used the graphic notation of the melody line to help us.

Week 2
What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Year 2!
In Maths, we have been showing great resilience as we tackled some tricky work. We’ve been adding two numbers that bridge ten and representing our calculations on a number line. At first it was challenging, but by the end of the week we all felt much more confident. We used our knowledge of number bonds to ten and practised partitioning the second number in our calculations. It was hard work, but we’re really proud of our progress!
To support our poetry learning, we joined the Michael Rosen Huge Poetry Party on Thursday. Michael shared some of his poems about food and told us entertaining stories — we loved it!
In Music, we had fun playing the glockenspiels. We discovered that the longer bars on the left make the lower notes and explored different ways to play, such as climbing up and down the notes, sliding between them, and even jumping over some!
Our Science work focused on hygiene. We set up an experiment using slices of bread to find out how bacteria spread and how handwashing helps prevent it. Some of us washed our hands with soap and warm water, others used hand sanitiser, and some didn’t wash at all! We also rubbed a slice of bread on our classroom tables. Now we’re waiting to see which one grows the most bacteria. Our predictions are that the tables will have the most bacteria and that hand washing will destroy more bacteria than hand sanitiser! What’s your prediction?
In Art, we learnt how to draw self-portraits. We had to concentrate carefully and follow instructions closely. It was a real challenge, but everyone persevered and produced amazing artwork.
In Computing, we continued learning about photography. After practising how to take photos last week, this week we explored taking pictures in both portrait and landscape formats.
On Tuesday, we observed a two-minute silence to remember those who have died in wars. In RE, we learnt that candles can also be used as a symbol of remembrance. We lit a candle, reflected quietly on people and animals we wanted to remember and then created beautiful wax pastel drawings of candles.
This week has also been Anti-Bullying Week. Year 2 read Tyrannosaurus Drip by Julia Donaldson and discussed how some characters were kind while others were not. We became ‘kindness detectives’, spotting examples of kindness around us throughout the week. Each class created their own Kindness Tree and it’s been wonderful watching the trees fill with leaves as we added our acts of kindness.
We also had our very first Enrichment Time session this week! The children had a fantastic time exploring new activities and trying something different. They all returned to class beaming with excitement and full of stories about what they had been doing.
Finally, we enjoyed visiting St Peter’s Church to see the incredible display of knitted poppies. Rev Will explained the meaning behind the poppies, helping us reflect further on remembrance.

Year 2 Autumn 2 Week 2 2025
Week 1
Welcome back to a brand-new half term! The children have returned full of energy and enthusiasm, ready for a busy few weeks of exciting learning.
This week we have learnt through poetry in English, using November Nights Countdown as inspiration. The children performed verses with expression, explored nouns, adjectives and verbs, and created their own descriptive firework phrases such as sparkling sparklers and fierce flames.
In Maths, we have been focusing on subtraction that bridges ten using rekenreks. The children learned to subtract efficiently by thinking about numbers in relation to ten, rather than counting back in ones, and explained their reasoning using mathematical language.
In Computing, the children began their new topic Digital Photography. They identified which devices can take photos, learned how to take clear pictures, and enjoyed experimenting with selfies and action shots while remembering to always ask permission before photographing others.
In PSHE, we explored “What makes us who we are?” The children discussed similarities and differences, created self-portraits showing what makes them unique, and celebrated how everyone is special in their own way.
In Art, the children started their new topic “Angels.” Inspired by An Angel Like Me and the paintings of Fra Angelico, they practised careful observational drawing, studying the details of wings, robes and features using pencils, pens and biros.
It’s been a fantastic first week back — full of creativity, reflection and enthusiasm. We are so proud of how well the children have settled into their new learning!

Week 8
This week we have been reading the story of The Gunpowder Plot. We learnt that a group of men, including Guy Fawkes and Robert Catesby, wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. We found out that this is the reason why some of us celebrate Bonfire Night on or around the 5th November. In English, we started the week by listening to and reordering the story of The Gunpowder Plot. We have also had a visit from the OpenBox Theatre Company, who transformed the hall into the Houses of Parliament. We had great fun retelling and bringing the story of ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ to life, with Kenn. Ask us some questions about what happened and why?
In PE we have been revising our gymnastic shapes – star, pike, straight and tuck. We then had a go on making these shapes on the PE equipment. We started by making a shape, we then travelled along the equipment and made a different shape in the middle and then at the end. We made sure that we were using the equipment safely and sensibly.
In Science we have been learning about how exercise, healthy eating and sleep are good for our bodies. We completed 5 different exercise activities such as running, jumping, skipping or hopping for 2 minutes. We found out about our pulse and we had to count our pulse rate very carefully to find out which exercise raised our heart rate the most. We then talked about The Eatwell Guide; to find out which foods belong to which group. Dr Geary then joined us for some Science Workshops on Friday. He showed us how our bodies digest food and we helped him demonstrate this using real food!

Week 7
We have had another great week! In Design and Technology, we made our own cars for the downhill dash and had a fantastic time racing them to see which one travelled the furthest. It was exciting to test our creations and see whose design worked best.
In P.E., we focused on balance and coordination. We challenged ourselves to walk across a beam while balancing a quoit on our heads – it was tricky but lots of fun! Everyone tried their best and showed great determination.
In Maths, we continued learning how to add two numbers that bridge ten. We used counters and tens frames to help us understand, and by the end of the week, we had made excellent progress. We also finished writing our wanted posters to help catch the Wolf from the story of Little Red Riding Hood – hopefully, someone spots him soon!
Year 2 Autumn 1 Week 7
Week 6
This week we were very excited as we used the forest for our learning. We built a Sukkah out of large branches and made the roof out of leaves. We then decorated it with colourful bunting and paperchains that we had made in class. When it was finished, we sat under it and ate an apple. This allowed us to deepen our understanding of how Jews celebrate the Festival of Sukkot. They build a shelter in their gardens, which represents the shelters their ancestors built in the desert. They eat their meals in them and some even sleep in them for 7 days. It was a lot of fun!
In Geography we became little meteorologists! We labelled the cities of the four countries in the UK on a map and then decided what the weather might be like there. We then performed a weather forecast to our friends. We used geographical vocabulary, such as north, south, east and west, we named the capital cities and used vocabulary related to the weather.
In Music we were composers! In small groups we created music that reflected the dragons we had created last lesson. We thought carefully about what personality our dragon might have, its size and whether it was a quick or a slow dragon. We then selected musical instruments that represented them and performed our compositions to the class. We used language such as tempo, dynamics, forte and piano.
We were able to get outside for our science lesson this week as we were thinking about how exercise affects our heart beats. We carried out a variety of exercises – some slow and some fast, and measured our pulse to see how our heart beats differed. We did find taking our pulse difficult, but we were resilient and kept trying.

Week 5
This week we have learnt through the story Little Red Riding Hood by Lari Don. We predicted what might happen, compared it with the traditional version, and built a bank of descriptive words about the wolf. The children also practised writing expanded noun phrases, which made their writing more powerful.
In Maths, the children explored how to add three numbers in different ways. Using tens frames, Numicon and Cuisenaire rods, they discovered that numbers can be added in any order and that spotting doubles and number bonds can make calculations quicker and easier. We talked about which strategies were the most efficient and why. The children enjoyed solving lots of practical problems and explaining how they had worked them out.
In Science, our focus has been on life cycles in the topic Animals Including Humans. The children sequenced the stages of frogs, butterflies, chickens and humans, using the correct scientific vocabulary. They also investigated the basic needs for survival, finding out that all living things need food, water and air to stay alive. The children asked thoughtful questions and used iPads to research fascinating facts about different animals.
In Computing, the children explored how information technology is all around us. They noticed examples both in school and in the wider world, such as barcode scanners, tills and tablets, and discussed how IT helps people at home, in shops and at work. The children were surprised to realise just how much technology is part of their daily lives. They were excited to share examples of the devices they use and see every day.
In RE, the children learned about thankfulness in our Harvest topic. They reflected on who they say thank you to, found out how Christians celebrate harvest, and discovered how Jewish people celebrate Sukkot by building a Sukkah and using the special items called the etrog and the lulav. The children designed and decorated their own Sukkah pictures and thought about how they would celebrate inside. This helped them to understand how people from different faiths show gratitude in special ways.
In PSHE, we thought carefully about what it means to be a good friend. We listened to Harold the giraffe’s friendship song, considered different scenarios, and made lists of what good friends do and don’t do. We finished with a fun circle game celebrating kind and friendly behaviours shown during the day. The children were very reflective and proud of the kind actions they had noticed in themselves and others.
In DT, the children began exploring wheels and axles. They experimented with fixed and free axles using construction kits, discovering how different mechanisms work. They also learned and used technical vocabulary such as chassis, axle and axle holder. This practical experience will help them when they design and build their own racing vehicles for the exciting Downhill Dash, which they are already looking forward to.

Week 4
We have had another brilliant week at school! We have been learning about how important it is to have the feeling of being connected with the people around us and how people that support us are like our support parachute. When we feel connected we can be at our brain best.
This week, we finished reading Little Answer and wrote our own statements to answer questions that visitors might have about our school. We remembered to use capital letters, full stops and question marks appropriately.
In Maths, we have been learning how to partition two-digit numbers using part-part-whole diagrams and used these to help solve addition and subtraction problems.
We continued learning about tempo and dynamics in music, using different instruments to explore playing quietly and loudly.
In geography, we started collecting data about the weather and observed how it changes over the week.
We have been learning about the life cycles of different animals in Science to help us understand how they grow and develop.
This week, we designed our own wheeled vehicle in DT, labelling the different parts. We had to decide what we were planning to use for our wheels, axles and chassis, as well as what the vehicle would look like. We also had to decide whether we wanted our vehicle to have a fixed or free axle. We used what we had learnt from last week's investigation session to help our decision making.

Week 3
We have had a brilliant third week at school! Everyone is settling in really well, getting to know new routines, making friends, and growing in confidence each day. In English, we’ve begun an exciting new learning journey based on the story Little Answer by Tim Hopgood. The children enjoyed playing a game of finding the answer to the question.
In Maths we worked with tens and ones to show two-digit numbers. We drew dienes blocks to represent numbers and solved clues like “It is an even number, it is more than 10, it is less than 50, it is not a multiple of ten.” We worked out what the number could be and drew it carefully to show the tens and ones.
In DT we practised using wheels and axles. We used Lego, Mobilo and Knex to make vehicles that could move. We learned about fixed axles, where the wheels move on their own, and free axles, where the wheels and axle turn together. We tried out different axle holders and tested our models to see which worked the best.
In Music we learned special Italian words that tell us how to play music. Forte means loud and piano means quiet. We practised saying the words and listened carefully to see if the music was being played quietly or loudly. We also talked about tempo, which is how fast or slow the music goes. We enjoyed performing short pieces and making our voices and instruments sound forte or piano to match the music.

Week 2
We have had a fantastic start to the new school year. All the children have settled really well and are already working hard!
We kicked off our English learning by reading Have you Filled a Bucket Today? We used the book as inspiration for our writing. We practiced writing simple sentences – remembering to include a capital letter and full stop – to explain how we could be bucket fillers.
In Maths we have been thinking about what makes up a ten and our multiples of tens. We are starting to add and subtract a ten from a number.
We have been expanding our vocabulary through our foundation subjects this week! We learnt what forte and piano means in Music as well as learning what the word thankful means in RE. In DT we were introduced to the words axle and chassis. In Geography we have been thinking about weather and learnt about a weather forecast (we even watched a Meteorologist forecasting the day's weather.) Why don't you ask us what the words mean?
All the classes were very excited to visit the new AMAZING library this week. It looks absolutely incredible! Can you spot all the book characters?
